3                     Do I need to pay for it?

The  News Reader is free to download, although you may have to pay data charges to your mobile network operator both to download it and to use it, depending on your contract. The reader itself is 70k in size, and uses somewhere around 5k of data each time the headlines are updated.

Just like FT.com you can access a certain amount of breaking news content and non-companies news for free, but you will need to log in with you FT.com user name and password to access all content. Once you have logged into the application once, you won’t need to again as it will remember you.

Please note that FT.com user names and passwords are case-sensitive, and that on some handsets phones will automatically capitalise the first character of any text entered, so you may need to ensure you are in lower case mode.

4                     How do I get the news reader onto my phone?

2 ways: either

1)    Go to www.ft.com/newsreader and enter your phone number into the box. You will receive a message on your phone from which you can download the News Reader

2)    Text GO FTAPP to 85080 (if you have a UK-registered phone) or GO FTAPP to +44 7786 203 222 (if you have a non-UK registered phone) and you will receive a message back with a link. Click on the link to download the news reader to your device. Alternatively, go to  www.ft.com/mobilenewsreader to download the app.

5                     Where do I find the News Reader on my phone once I’ve downloaded it?

It depends on your phone. For example:

·       On Nokia phones it will often be stored in the ‘My Own’ folder on the main menu.

·       On Sony Ericsson phones it may be put into the ‘Applications’ folder on your phone

·       On Orange, T-Mobile, O2, Qtec, Imate or other Windows Mobile-powered phones, it may be stored within ‘Java’ on the main menu.

·       On BlackBerry phones, the application will appear at the bottom of the main menu, or under ‘Applications’. You can move it onto the main screen by pressing the ‘alt’ key and clicking on the application. The application can then be moved where you want it. Press ‘alt’ again to save it in the new position.

If in doubt, please consult the user manual for your device, or call your mobile operator for details.

6                     How do I delete the application from my phone?

This varies depending on the device. Consult the user manual to see how to uninstall Java applications on your device.

7                     I can’t log in to my FT.com account – what am I doing wrong?

Remember that user names and passwords are case sensitive many phones will automatically capitalise the first letter as you type, so ensure that this is not the case. Also ensure that the phone is not in ‘predictive text’ mode.

8                     The application loads but I don’t see any stories. I get the error: 'Could not connect to the server. This is probably due to missing or invalid network access point settings. Refer to your device's manual and to your network provider.'

You will get this error if you have never successfully connected to receive stories from the app. The most likely cause is that the internet access point for Java applications hasn’t been correctly selected or configured. Please note that just because you are able to use the internet on your phone, this does not mean that you can use the application.

Try restarting the application and selecting a different access point for using the application; for example, if you used the WAP setting, try using the GPRS or Internet setting (which should normally be the correct one). There are a also small amount of networks that do not provide suitable access points to some of their accounts. Your network provider will be able to confirm if this is the case.

9                     The application loads but I don’t see any stories. I get a ‘server connection error’

This error usually happens if you have previously been able to access the application, but for some reason cannot access the network. This is normally if there is some problem with network coverage. Ensure you are in an area with signal and try again. If the problem persists, ensure that the GPRS or Internet gateway has been selected as the access point for the application to access the network. If this does not work, uninstall the application and reinstall.

10                  I get a ‘download failed’ error.

Check that your phone is in our list of supported phones, or supports Java MIDP2. If it does, then try downloading directly by visiting the following case-sensitive URL on your phone’s internet browser:

http://leiki.magenta.net/ft2/mobile/ftapp.jad

11                  Where do I find more help information?

Click ‘Help’ on the main menu of the News Reader.

12                  I’ve loaded the application: How do I scroll across the tabs on my BlackBerry?

Simply hold the ‘Alt’ key down and scroll the scrollwheel and you will scroll across the tabs. For Blackberries with a trackwheel, simply scroll to the right or left.
